 A diver gets lucky to get so close to a whale shark (Rhincodontypus) or butanding (local name) in the waters of Sarangani Bay in General Santos City. On Saturday, March 9, 2019, some 14 individuals were sighted surface feeding by Task Force Butanding Gensan, bringing to 16 the total number of whale sharks documented in the area. The first two were sighted by DENR-Region 12 in 2014. DENR-Region 12 Executive Director NiloTamoria said the recent documentation highlights the global significance of the Philippines in the conservation of this gentle giant. Some 21 officers from the Manila and Central Visayas regional offices of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) are proud recipients of the Wildlife Law Enforcement Awards from the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in recognition for their invaluable support in the campaign against illegal wildlife trade in the country. Leading the presentation of the awards, held Tuesday (March 5, 2019) at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City, are DENR Asst. Secretary Ricardo Calderon and BMB Director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez (4th& 5th from left, back row). For the past five years, the DENR has conferred the Wildlife Law Enforcement Awards to at least 365 men and women who defended the voiceless wildlife species against illegal collectors and traders.World Wildlife Day is observed annually on March 2. ###

Go present the memorandum of agreement for the rehabilitation of Wetland No. 8 in Brgy. Manoc-manoc in Boracay island under the DENR’s Adopt-a-wetland Program. Cimatu said the adoption of the wetland by the JG Summit was a “positive step towards biodiversity conservation.”Under the agreement, JGSPC commits to rehabilitate the wetland at no cost to the government, and to prioritize the adjacent local communities for any suitable employment opportunities. The MOA signing was held Thursday at the DENR office in Quezon City. ###
