NEW DEBRIS AT THE BAYWALK

THE CHIEF AND THE MAYOR

Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu and Manila Mayor Isko Moreno (2nd and 3rd from left, respectively) inspect the area beside Estero de San Antonio Abad in Bgy. 718 Malate, Manila where the houses of around 50 informal settler families were demolished to give way to the clearing of the waterway. The estero, which was found to have high coliform level of 10 million most probable number per 100 ml, drains to Manila Bay and contributes to the poor water quality of the bay. Joining Cimatu and Moreno is Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Units Concerns Benny D. Antiporda (extreme left).

SKIMMER PARA SA MANILA BAY REHAB

Upang mas mapabilis ang paglilinis ng Manila Bay, gumagamit ng makabagong teknolohiy atulad ng skimmer sa rehabilitasyon ng ilog. Ayon sa pinakahuling ulat ng Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), na siyang nagmo-monitor ng paghahakot ng basura gamit ang naturang skimmer mula noong Hunyo 27, umabot na sa 4,120 sako ng water hyacinths at iba’tibang uri ng basura ang nakuha sa makasaysayang ilog mula nang magsimula ang “Battle for Manila Bay”.  Pinangunahan ng Department of Environment and Natural Resources sa pamumuno ni Secretary Roy A. Cimatu ang rehabilitasyon ng Manila Bay batay sa Administrative Order No. 16 ni Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte na inilabas noong Pebrero 19 ng kasalukuyang taon.#

THE PRIME MOVER

Environmental lawyer and activist Atty. Antonio Oposa, Jr. (right) looks at paintings depicting Manila Bay during the Art for Manila Bay Rehabilitation Exhibit organized by the Dynamic Art Group and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) at The Gallery of the Solaire Resort and Casino in Parañaque City. In 1999, Oposa acted as counsel for concerned residents of Manila Bay joined by other respondents who sued the government for its failure to protect Manila Bay for the future generations of Filipinos. The suit led the Supreme Court to issue in 2008 the Writ of Continuing Mandamus to 12 government agencies, including the DENR, for the rehabilitation of Manila Bay and the restoration of its water quality to make it fit for swimming and other contact recreation. Joining Oposa is DENR Undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Units Concerns Benny D. Antiporda. The exhibit runs until July 27, 2019.#

ART ON MANILA BAY REHABILITATION

Artenthusiasts view the vibrant artworks of member-artists of the Dynamic Art Group portraying the beauty of Manila Bay and the government’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate it. The exhibit, entitled “Art for Manila Bay Rehabilitation”, aims to “give a clearer picture of the current and possible future achievements” of the rehabilitation program, as well as to boost tourism and renew appreciation of the bay and its natural splendor. The exhibit at The Gallery of the Sky Tower, Solaire Resort and Casino in Parañaque City, opened on June 18 and will run until July 27, 2019. Participating artists include Vic Bachoco, Esther Garcia, maxi Ramos, Jun Rocha, August Santiago, Fernando Sena, Fritz Silorio, Bing Siochi, Ely Tablizo, and Myk Velasco. #
