ECOSYSTEMS SERVICES FROM PROTECTED AREAS

DENR Undersecretary for Environment and International Environmental Affairs Atty. Jonas R. Leones underscores the contributions of protected areas in sustaining ecosystems services and benefits during the 2nd National Protected Area National Conference in Mandaluyong City.  Leones, who represented DENR Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje in the conference, likewise shared new paradigms and good practices in protected area management. Around 200 protected area managers, stakeholders from local government units, international partner organizations, representatives from indigeneous communities and civil society attended the event organized by the Biodiversity Management Bureau of the DENR. ###

BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION EXHIBIT

Senate Climate Change Committee Chair Senator Loren Legarda and DENR Assistant Secretary for Administration and Finance Corazon C. Davis (right) lead the ribbon cutting ceremony to open the exhibit that showcases the biodiversity conservation programs of the DENR-BMB and its partner organizations, including Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation, GIZ and Foundation for the Philippine Environment. The exhibit is being held in conjunction with the 2nd National Protected Area Conference held in Mandaluyong City from April 26 to 28. Joining them are Biodiversity Management Bureau Director Theresa Mundita Lim (2nd from left), ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity Executive Director Roberto Oliva (left) and Ms. Universe 2013 3rd runner-up Ariella Arida. ###

DENR LEADS EARTH DAY COVENANT SIGNING

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), represented by Assistant Secretary for Planning Michelle Angelica Go, leads the Covenant Signing to highlight the country’s  support for the Paris Agreement during the Earth Day celebration held at the DENR Social Hall on April 22. Other signatories to the covenant were Earth Day Network Philippines, Inc., Climate Change Commission, other government agencies  and non-government organizations and advocacy groups. The Philippines pledged to support the Agreement by doing its share to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. ####

PH SIGNS PARIS AGREEMENT

With special authority from President Aquino, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J. P. Paje signs for and behalf of the Republic of the Philippines the landmark Paris climate agreement during the high level signing ceremony held April 22 at the UN headquarters in New York. Paje also delivered the Philippine statement underscoring its commitment to meet its pledge through the implementation of the national climate action plan and integration of climate change in the national and local development plans and budgets, even as he appealed to world leaders to work together for the full implementation of the climate agreement. ###

PAJE DELIVERS PH STATEMENT ON PARIS AGREEMENT

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje delivers the Philippine statement during the high level signing ceremony of the Paris climate agreement held April 22 at the UN headquarters in New York.  Paje said the Philippines, a highly vulnerable developing nation, has already taken steps to pursue national actions to address climate change through its intended nationally determined contribution (INDC).  Paje signed the Paris agreement by virtue of a special authority from President Aquino. ###
