Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu shakes hands with Michael Martillano of the Boracay Business Administration of Scuba Shops (BBASS) following the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the DENR’s Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Aklan and BBASS for the protection of the biodiversity of Boracay Island. BBASS will, among others, assist the DENR in the conduct of a rapid marine biodiversity assessment, and organize/activate existing patrol groups to enforce the agreed policies on designated snorkeling and dive sites in Boracay Island. ###

DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda (in suit and tie) answers queries from members of the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA) on the rehabilitation of Boracay island. Antiporda stressed that hotel and establishment operations after the island’s opening on October 26 will be limited only to those accredited as compliant with environmental laws and other government regulations. He also expressed pride that “a much better Boracay” awaits tourists upon entry to the island. As a licensed forester and president of the DENR- Association of Career Executives (ACE), DENR Undersecretary for Policy, Planning and International Affairs puts to heart all efforts to reforest the country’s denuded areas as he leads fellow executives in the department in planting some 1,000 native tree species in a 10-hectares area within the Angat watershed in Norzagaray, Bulacan province. Held October 6, 2018, the tree planting event was one of three community-focused activities of DENR-ACE in celebration of its 45th founding anniversary of the Career Executive Service Board on November 10, with theme: “Serbisyong CESO, Kalibre 45: Community Passion Projects.” The other two activities include a massive mangrove planting rehabilitation in Nasugbu, Batangas and coastal clean-up in the Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area on October 13 and 20, respectively. ###

No words could describe the happiness written on the face of Environment Secretary Roy A. Cimatu as he watches the children of the Ati tribe play with each other in Brgy. Balabag in Boracay island. The DENR chief, who also chairs the Boracay Inter-agency Task Force, has repeatedly said that the rehabilitation of the world-famous paradise island is for the enjoyment of future generations. The government has particularly included the island’s Ati indigenous group, considered as native Aklanons, as beneficiaries to its livelihood and ecotourism programs. ###
