In celebration of Earth Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 2 has inaugurated today the protected areas information center at the Rogelio B. Baggayan Nature Park and Wildlife Center (RBBNPWC) in Tuguegarao City.
 
Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn Bambalan said the information center will serve as the learning hub on protected areas and biodiversity. “We believe that with right information, we can influence the people on how they think and act to protect and preserve the environment,” she added.
 
She also enjoined the officials and employees to have passion at work to attain the vision of the Department.
 
“As environmental stewards, we can bring change...If we are passionate to do earthly activities, then that will be a great incentive the environment will get from us. Let us be serious in advocating our core values in the DENR - Discipline, Excellence, Nobility and Responsibility,” the regional environment chief underlined.
 
The inauguration and blessing of the information center was graced by former environment Assistant Secretary Corazon Davis who thanked the DENR Region 2 for its support in her ongoing reforestation project in Baggao, Cagayan.
 
During the Earth Day celebration, personnel of the DENR and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau also planted trees at the wildlife center.
 
The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Batanes spearheaded a cleanup activity in Basco town.
In Isabela, a bamboo planting activity was held in Angadanan and Naguilian towns and cleanup drive was conducted in Cabagan and Santiago City. An information drive and distribution of coloring books were held in Cauayan City.
 
A costal cleanup was held in Aparri, Cagayan followed by the releasing of a turtle back to the sea. Cleanup and tree planting activities were also held in Solana and Tuguegarao City and in Alcala and Claveria, respectively.
 
PENRO Quirino and CENRO Diffun personnel meanwhile conducted maintenance and protection activities at the 3.5 hectare Arboretum located in Cabarroguis town.
 
In Nueva Vizcaya, tree planting activities were held in Bayombong, Aritao and Dupax del Sur.
 
Earth Day is celebrated in the Philippines every April 22 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 553 s. 1990. This year’s theme is "Invest in Our Planet." #
