It's all systems go for the development of bamboo plantation in Cagayan province following the signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Cagayan State University (CSU).
 
The partnership agreement was signed on Sept. 29 by DENR Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn C. Bambalan and CSU President Urdujah A. Tejada. The signing was witnessed by PENR Officer Ismael T. Manaligod and CSU Gonzaga Campus Executive Officer Froilan A. Pacris Jr.
 
In support of the National Greening Program of the government, the 2.6 million peso worth project will be used for the production of 76,500 quality planting materials of bamboo stocks to be planted in 375 hectares.
 
The bamboo plantation will be developed by a people’s organization in the area to provide livelihood opportunity to local communities. They will be engaged as direct partners in the production of quality planting materials.
 
Director Bambalan said the project is aimed at rehabilitating degraded forestlands using bamboo as prime commodity. “The DENR under Secretary Roy A. Cimatu is now gearing toward developing bamboo plantations as sustainable source of food and for alternative wood source in the country,” she said in her message.
 
Bamboo plays a vital role in forest recovery and climate change adaptation and mitigation.
 
As agreed upon by both parties, the DENR shall identify available and suitable areas for the bamboo plantation development. It shall conduct survey, mapping and planning for the identified sites.
 
Having the capability to develop technologies through its research and development expertise, the university shall provide technical assistance and trainings in the plantation establishment and management of bamboo and other technology. It shall also establish nursery for production of bamboo planting materials in the CSU campus nearest to the identified planting site.
 
University President Tejada committed full support to the project and to adhere to the responsibilities that are expected of them.#
