Environment Secretary Gina Lopez (right), Senator Cynthia Villar (left) and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim grace the launching of the Protect Wildlife Project, March 6, 2017 at the Sequoia Hotel in Quezon City.  A 5-year project, Protect Wildlife is the first USAID initiative in the Philippines to align with the U.S. government’s newly signed Eliminate, Neutralize and Disrupt Wildlife Trafficking Act of 2016 which addresses the global illegal wildlife trade.  The project, to be implemented in close coordination with various government agencies such as the DENR-Biodiversity Management Bureau, will commence in Palawan, Zamboanga City and Tawi-Tawi. ###

Director Theresa Mundita Lim (right) of the Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), receives one of six horns of rhinoceros from Lt. Angelito Cruz (left) of the Bureau of Customs, in a formal turn-over ceremony held at the Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center on Monday (Feb. 27). The six rhino horns, estimated to cost around P74M in the black market, were seized in 2012 by the Bureau of Customs and believed to have originated from Mozambique. However, Lim said the seizure will be subjected to DNA test  to confirm their origin before deciding on their disposal, that is, either to return to the country of origin or be destroyed. ###

Environment Secretary Gina Lopez presents to pro-mining advocates, comprised of students and mine workers from Zambales, Benguet and Surigao, a folder of mining audit documents, which she says are available for public scrutiny.  The rallyists trooped to the DENR on Monday, Feb. 13, to air their objection to the closure order issued by Lopez against 23 mining companies as this will result in the loss of their jobs while the student-rallyists called for the disclosure of the mining audit reports. ###

Students make better use of their cellphones, which they said are products of mining, in capturing the mining audit documents which DENR Secretary Gina Lopez has made available for their scrutiny.  The students, along with mine workers from Zambales, Benguet and Surigao trooped to the DENR on Monday, Feb. 13, to protest the issuance of closure orders to 23 mining operations for causing massive damage to the environment.  Lopez also took the opportunity to announce that the public can access the mining audit results at the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.###
