ACTIONS FOR WETLANDS. "We call for actions to protect our wetlands. Wetlands are like kidneys that regulate water and filter wastes to enhance the quality of groundwater supplies."

Forester Enrique Pasion, chief of the Conservation and Development Division encouraged the public in his recent interview over DZGR Bombo Radyo Tuguegarao in celebration of the World Wetlands Day (WWD).

He also said the Department has been lobbying to the Regional Development Council to issue a resolution to regulate the use of glyphosate especially in upland areas as it poses threats not only in wetlands but also in watershed areas.

WWD is annually celebrated every February 2. The first anniversary of the Cagayan River Restoration Project highlighted this year’s wetlands day celebration.

The DENR Cagayan Valley also held a regionwide planting of bamboos and other native species which was participated in by uniformed personnel, other national and local government employees, and barangay officials and residents.

Other activities like cleanup drives, birdwatching, monitoring of wetlands, removal of water hyacinths, information drives, press conference, and radio guesting were also conducted.

Region 2 has a total of 22 wetlands: eight both in the provinces of Batanes and Isabela, and six in Cagayan.#
