PARTNERS FOR BAMBOO DEVELOPMENT IN BAGGAO. In support of the National Greening Program (NGP) and to introduce bamboo industry in Baggao, Cagayan, a bamboo plantation and research area will be established by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 2, Local Government Unit (LGU) of Baggao and former DENR official Corazon Davis.

The partnership was formed through an online signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Davis, DENR Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn Bambalan and Mayor Joan Dunuan.

The agreement allows the use of the 8.24-hectare lot owned by Davis in Barrio Masical for the establishment of bamboo development facility.

“We consider bamboo growing as a long term solution to reduce siltation in our river systems,” said Davis as she explained the project was conceptualized after the onslaught of Typhoon Ulysses in Cagayan and Isabela.

She added planting bamboos is economically viable providing possible livelihood opportunities to the communities in the said town.

As agreed, the DENR will conduct site preparation and will facilitate trainings on bamboo production.

“This plantation and research area will serve as our learning laboratory in support to our NGP and for the Cagayan River Rehabilitation Project,” said Director Bambalan. She added the project will be fully supported by the DENR.

In her message, Mayor Dunuan said the new partnership supports the LGU’s advocacy to plant one billion trees in the whole municipality.

The local government will provide technical assistance in the preparation and production of bamboo in the allotted area through its Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office, including security assistance in the premises of the area.

The MOA signing held today was witnessed by Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Ismael Manaligod and Alcala Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Aida Adap. Legal Chief Richard Jayson Garan, Conservation and Development Chief Enrique Pasion, and other key officials also joined the activity.#
