LOOK: Young environmental ambassadors in Batanes joined recently the personnel of Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office in cleaning up the coastal areas in Uyugan town in celebration of the Month of the Ocean.

The ENR ambassadors are students of Batanes State College (BSC) who were chosen by the BSC and the DENR as partners in environmental advocacy.

Uniformed personnel from the Philippine National Police and personnel of the local government unit also participated in cleaning up the seaside of Barangays Itbud and Imnajbu.

A total of 40 bags of garbage composed mostly of plastics were collected.

“The cleanup was conducted to protect the coastal resources of Batanes from pollution thereby preserving the different species of fishes that abound in the province,” said DENR Batanes chief Victoria Baliuag.

She said barangay Imnajbu is home to one of the province’s marine protected areas.

The Month of the Ocean is celebrated every May by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 57 issued in 1998.

The declaration mandated a collaborative celebration among all sectors of the society towards conservation, protection and sustainable management of Philippine coastal and ocean resources.#
