A total of 12 monitoring and sampling stations were established around the island last year in order to identify sources of water quality problems. These shoreline and offshore stations are positioned within the protected area's multiple-use zones and strict protection zones. The establishment of these stations aims to comprehensively manage, address and effectively reduce the drivers and threats of degradation of the coastal and marine ecosystems.

 

Water samples were collected for the analysis of fecal coliform, color, total suspended solids, phosphate and nitrate at the EMB laboratory.

 

Earlier, foot patrol along the shoreline stations, inventory of community households with and without septic tanks, drainage systems of livestock and other animals, and key informant interview were undertaken as initial efforts to address water quality problems within the protected area.

 

The water quality monitoring and assessment implemented under the Coastal and Marine Ecosystems Management Program is done during dry and wet season every year. It is conducted in line with DENR Administrative Order No. 2016-08 or the Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards.#
