DENR Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn Bambalan said the bamboos and indigenous species planted in about 41 hectares is in support of the Cagayan River Rehabilitation Program under the Build Back Better initiatives of the government.

 

“This green infrastructure initiative alongside the dredging of the sandbars will contribute in the stabilization of riverbanks and will prevent further widening. It will also reduce the effects of climate change,” Director Bambalan said.

 

During the launch of the Cagayan River Rehabilitation Program in February 2, environment Secretary Roy Cimatu led the planting of 185 bamboos in the 925-meter stretch of riverbank along Barangay Bangag, Lal-lo, Cagayan.

 

The DENR has initially identified 294.6 hectares for bamboo development plantation along Cagayan River, Pared River, Pinacanauan de Tumauini River, Pinacanauan de San Pablo River, Didekkel River, Ganano River, Dumayop River and Magat River.

 

As of March 10, more than 150,000 bamboos of different species were produced under the National Greening Program in Region 2.#
