ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT. Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn Bambalan of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) pays a courtesy visit to Mayor Joan Dunuan of Baggao, Cagayan.
The two lady executives discussed in the meeting forest protection and management, river rehabilitation, and resettlement of families affected by Typhoon Ulysses.
Mayor Dunuan presented forest rehabilitation and protection measures implemented in the municipality.
She said the local government launched its “One Billion Tree Planting and Growing Project” in 2019 through agroforestry and bamboo propagation. “This will not only save our forest but also will provide livelihood to our people,” she added.
In the meeting, Director Bambalan informed the local chief executive of Secretary Roy Cimatu’s directive of planting bamboos for riverbank stabilization. She also discussed the need to rehabilitate the Pared River, one of the major tributaries of the Cagayan River.
For forest protection, the regional environment chief said the DENR and other law enforcement agencies are now intensifying surveillance efforts to prevent the trees from being cut.
“We need to strictly enforce environmental and forestry laws,” Director Bambalan said as she emphasized that kaingin-making is prohibited under Presidential Decree 705.
Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Ismael Manaligod committed support to the greening initiative of the local government through the production of indigenous seedlings at the Mechanized and Modernized Forest Nursery.
Joining the meeting were Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Aida Adap, Conservation and Development Division Chief Enrique Pasion, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer Frederic Tomas, and other DENR technical staff.#
