YOUTH FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. Sixty students from five state universities in Cagayan Valley have accepted the challenge to become Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) Ambassadors following the signing of partnership agreement.

The memorandum of agreement (MOA) was signed by DENR Regional Executive Director Gwendolyn C. Bambalan and the presidents of selected college and universities, namely; Alfonso R. Simon of Batanes State College, Urdujah C. Alvarado of Cagayan State University, Ricmar P. Aquino of Isabela State University, Andres Z. Taguiam of Nueva Vizcaya State University, and Hermenegildo F. Samoy Jr. of Quirino State University.

The ENR Ambassador Project aims to involve the youth in environmental protection and conservation through information, education and communication (IEC) activities. In line with Republic Act (RA) No. 9512 or the National Awareness and Education Act of 2008 and RA 8044 or the Youth in Nation-Building Act of 2004, the project highlights the capability of the youth to contribute to economic growth and sustained national development through promoting environmental awareness.

“Environmental protection is a responsibility the DENR cannot do alone. The support and participation of the academe, the youth, and the community in general, are vital for this Department to succeed in its endeavors,” said Director Bambalan in her message.

The regional environment chief said the young people are effective partners and force multipliers in environmental conservation and protection. "Your contribution in our campaign for forest protection and development will make Cagayan Valley cleaner, healthier and more livable," she said adding that the DENR will orient them on its programs and projects. It will also conduct skills enhancement trainings and will provide them the necessary resources.

As partners of the DENR, the 60 students shall assist in IEC activities through writing of ENR articles and conduct of environmental lectures and environmental reporting through social media platforms.

The ENR Ambassadors who were present during the MOA signing expressed their gratitude as they committed to faithfully fulfill their initiatives for the betterment of the environment in their respective schools and communities.
For their part, the university presidents committed to work closely with the DENR and to monitor the implementation of the project in their institutions.#
