MARINE RESOURCES CONSERVATION – Personnel of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Batanes, and members of the Imnajbu Fishermen Association prepare the permanent markers and buoys that will be installed at the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the coastal zone of Uyugan, said province. The markers will not also serve as boundary of the MPA but will also enhance the conservation of reefs, seagrass beds and fish habitats in the area. In March 2018, the Sangguniang Bayan of Uyugan passed Municipal Ordinance No. 18-136 declaring the 259,386 sq.m. of the coastal area as Nameket-Mayrunguj Marine Fish Sanctuary and providing prohibited acts and corresponding penalties. Marine Fish Sanctuary is an area designated where fishing or harvesting of resources is prohibited.
