Hot lumber benefit schools

Public schools in Region 2 had benefitted from confiscated forest products donated by the DENR from Feb. to Sept. this year.

Forester Joel S. Daquioag, Enforcement Division chief, said a total of 5,503.52 board feet of confiscated lumber were donated to four (4) schools regionwide broken down as: Cagayan National High School in Tuguegarao City – 2,399.84; Bonfal West Elementary School and Bonfal Pilot Central School, both in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, 1,204.16 and 602.08, respectively; and Day Care Center located in San Gabriel, Tuguegarao City – 296.8. The rest were donated to the Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Office.

The wood materials, with an estimated value of P175,408.64, were used in the manufacture of armchairs and tables, and improvement or construction of buildings and other facilities.

The donation is covered by a Deed of Donation executed by and between the DENR and the DepEd.

As provided for in the Deed of Donation, the DepEd shall be responsible in the identification of priority projects to be constructed/manufactured for their official use. The Agency shall also be tasked in the hauling, distribution, documentation of the donated forest products from the custodian or place stockpiled to their different projects.

Since Calendar Year 2010, a total of 456,359.68 bd.ft. were disposed to the DepEd, local government units and other national government agencies.

“The DepEd is given priority in the disposition of confiscated forest products pursuant to Executive Order No. 23 Declaring a Moratorium on the Cutting and Harvesting of Timber in the Natural and Residual Forests and Creating the Anti-Illegal Logging Task Force issued by President Benigno S.
